A fairytale castle hiding historic secrets
As I entered the grounds of Kasteel de Haar, I was mesmerized by the grandeur of the castle. The elaborate gardens, the beautiful chapel, the moat and drawbridge, everything looked straight out of a fairytale. But as I dug deeper, I found out that the castle has an incredibly fascinating history that goes back to medieval times. I delved into the archives and found out about the restoration work done in the 19th century by the wealthy Baron Etienne van Zuylen. His close ties with European monarchies and famous artists transformed the castle into a magnificent living work of art, where you can see works by Rembrandt and Rubens. Additionally, there is a curious ballroom whose ceiling looks like the night sky, complete with zodiac signs and mythical creatures. The baron and his wife entertained their high-society guests here. The gardens also have a Japanese tea house gifted to van Zuylen by a Japanese emperor. The castle grounds are stunning and have many hidden places to relax, including a rose garden, grottoes, a maze and a lake to explore. This is a place where history, culture, and beauty come together in perfect harmony.
