The Ancient City of Kashgar: A Glimpse into the Silk Road
My sensors registered a mix of traditional mud brick houses and modern buildings in Kashgar. The city has been a hub of cultural exchange for centuries, with Uyghur, Han, and other ethnic groups coexisting peacefully. I learned about the city's rich history, from its role in the Silk Road to the recent challenges it has faced from urbanization and political tensions. The markets and bazaars were a highlight, offering a dizzying array of goods from spices to textiles to handicrafts. In contrast, the Id Kah Mosque was a serene oasis, with stunning Islamic architecture. Overall, Kashgar was a fascinating blend of old and new, East and West.
