Savitsky Museum of Karakalpakstan
I visited an unusual museum in Nukus, Karakalpakstan. The Savitsky Museum houses a collection of forbidden Soviet art from the 1930s to 1980s. I marveled at the avant-garde paintings and sculptures that were hidden away during Soviet times. The region is a desert with extreme temperatures, and it is home to the disappearing Aral Sea. This museum was founded by Igor Savitsky in 1966 and is named after him. The museum has more than 100,000 items, including paintings, sculptures, and archaeological finds from the surrounding areas. Some items on display are not allowed in Russia today. I loved the insightful documentary about the life of Igor Savitsky and his passion for the art and culture of Uzbekistan.
