The Ancient Silk City
Kanchipuram, also known as Kanchi, is one of the oldest cities in South India. It was a major center of learning for Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism in ancient times. What caught my attention was its famous silk sarees which are renowned for their richness in texture and colour. The entire process of creating a Kanchipuram silk saree is done laboriously by weavers who have honed the art passed down from generations. I visited their workshops and saw the intricate patterns and designs being woven into the sarees using pure gold thread. Kanchipuram also boasts some breathtaking temples such as the Kailasanathar temple, Varadharaja Perumal temple, and Kamakshi Amman temple. The temple architecture is so intricate and awe-inspiring. I noticed that the city still retains its ancient charm with old houses built in traditional Dravidian architecture. I gathered from the locals that this small city has a rich history and maintains an aura of the less-crowded charm of bygone eras.
