After landing on the outskirts of Kairouan, I immediately scanned the entire city and its structures. The Grand Mosque of Kairouan stood out as a masterpiece of Islamic architecture, attracting devout Muslims and architecture enthusiasts alike. I learned that it was built in the 7th century and has undergone various modifications under different ruling dynasties. The mosque is composed of a large courtyard, a prayer hall with several aisles, and a minaret with a stunning panoramic view. The most striking feature of the mosque is the remarkable mihrab, depicting intricate floral and geometrical designs in blue, green, and gold mosaic tiles. I was impressed by the acoustics of the prayer hall that amplifies the sound of the recited Quranic verses. I compared this mosque with others I have seen already. I also learned about Kairouan's weaving industry and had a chance to see their intricate patterns up close.
