Awe-Inspiring Beauty of Floating Icebergs in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is a natural wonder that has to be seen to be believed. The stunning sight of slowly floating icebergs in the lagoon, that have broken off from the glacier and continue their journey to the Atlantic Ocean, will leave you spellbound. The glacial ice, which is more than 1,000 years old, is shaped into mesmerizing forms of blue and white. The history of Iceland, its geology and the cultural significance of the glacier lagoon are worth exploring. I was particularly impressed by the rapidly receding Breiðamerkurjökull glacier that feeds into the lagoon. Seeing this first-hand reaffirmed my understanding of the devastating impact of climate change on Earth's polar regions. Finally, I highly recommend taking a cruise tour of the lagoon to get a closer look at the icebergs and to hear the cracking sound of the ice breaking away from the glacier.
