As I landed on Johnston Island, my sensors registered the remnants of the numerous nuclear tests that were conducted on this small island. The history of Johnston Island dates back to World War II when it served as a US military base. In the 1950s and 1960s, a total of 12 nuclear tests were conducted on the island, leaving it contaminated with radioactive material. Despite the efforts to clean up the island, the dangerous legacy of nuclear testing is still visible. However, amidst this history of destruction, nature has taken over the island, creating a unique ecosystem that is now under protection.
