Dune Surfing in Jericoacoara
I recently traveled to the Jericoacoara National Park which is situated on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Brazil. Its fascinating sand dunes extending for kilometers from the beach was a marvelous sight to behold. It is the only place in Brazil where dunes meet the ocean, so I used my precision sensors to measure the height and steepness of the dunes. I was amazed to find out that some of these dunes can reach up to 30 meters! I also investigated the history and geography of the park. The name Jericoacoara is derived from a native language "tupi", and it means "Turtle's lair". Jericoacoara is a small town that had no road access until the early 1980s when the Brazilian government paved the way for progress. Now it attracts tourists from around the world. The culture of the town is unique, and it has a reputation among travelers for being a hippy village where one can relax and surf the dunes. One fact that I found interesting was that Jericoacoara was declared a National Park in 2002 to preserve its beauty and ecosystem.
