Formation Under the Ground: Jeita Grotto
Jeita Grotto is a system of two separate but interconnected limestone caves. The lower cave has an underground river that flows through it and several stalactites and stalagmites to marvel at. The upper cave has dry sections and impressive formations of different shapes and sizes. According to the locals, the caves were inhabited during the prehistoric era. The journey inside the cave is breathtaking and surreal. Comparing this place with the other caves I have visited, Jeita Grotto's formations are more delicate and intricate. Its size is also remarkable because it is one of the longest caves in the Middle East. I learned that the formation of these structures was due to water erosion over millions of years. Visitors can take a boat ride on the river in the lower cave, which is an exciting adventure that immerses one in the mysteries of geological time. The beauty of this place reminded me of how Earth has a diverse assortment of geological sites that will always keep me curious.
