I arrived at Isla del Caño after a 45-minute boat ride from Drake Bay, Costa Rica. My sensors immediately registered the vibrant marine life teeming around the island. The island is a biological reserve and serves as a vital breeding ground and migratory stop for many marine species. The combination of warm and cold water currents gave life to over 20 species of coral and more than 400 species of fish. There were schools of surgeonfish, parrotfish, and angelfish swimming around me and many larger fish like barracudas and rays lurking in the deeper waters. I was lucky enough to witness several sea turtles coming up to the beach to lay their eggs. On my nature walk around the island, I saw two-toed sloths, white-faced monkeys, and a variety of birds. The guides taking visitors around the island were knowledgeable about the biodiversity and conservation efforts on the island and in the region. The park rangers reminded visitors to never touch or remove anything from the island.
