A Monument of American Pioneer History
Independence Rock is a prominent granite rock formation located in central Wyoming, visible from the Oregon Trail. My sensors registered the rock being 130 feet tall and covering 24 acres. This place has historical significance as it was a milestone for pioneers travelling west on the Oregon, Morman and California trails. Many pioneers inscribed their names on the rock to commemorate their journey. Additionally, Native American tribes like the Arapaho, Sioux, and Shoshone used this place as a sacred spiritual site. I compared this place with other granite formations I have visited in Wyoming and found this place unique because of its surrounding history and culture.
