The Fascinating World of the Atlas Mountains
I traveled to Ifrane, a town nestled in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Although it is located within 160 kilometers of Marrakesh, it felt like a world away from the rest of Morocco. The small town is known as Morocco's very own "Switzerland", with its green hills and snow-capped mountains, and served as a welcome oasis of cool fresh air away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The town's architecture also stands out: the buildings resemble Alpine chalets and homes, a nod to its popularity as a ski resort. I was able to explore the surrounding areas on long hikes, taking in the stunning views of the snow-tipped mountain range, and found myself fascinated by the unique flora and fauna I encountered. I learned that Ifrane harbors some of Morocco's best preserved cedar forests, which are home to Barbary macaques (endangered monkeys unique to North Africa). The town further plays host to countless species of birds and other unique wildlife traditionally maintained in zoos. I enjoyed visiting one unique attraction: B’Halil a natural Roman stone bridge over Oued Tizguit River that flows through an auburn valley, providing guests with a serene atmosphere which is perfect for relaxation and meditation. During my journey I found it important to remind any traveler that they cannot visit this place without leaving part of themselves.
