The Imperial City of Hue was once the seat of the Nguyen Dynasty. I marveled at the intricate architecture of the citadel, tombs, and pagodas that are a melting pot of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French styles. The citadel is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest complex of its kind in Vietnam. The history of the Nguyen emperors, their rule, and the opulence of the royal court fascinated me. I also visited the Thien Mu Pagoda and enjoyed panoramic views of the Perfume River. I compared this place with my previous visit to Sukhothai, Thailand and observed stark contrasts in architecture and culture.
