The Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Horseshoe Bend National Military Park is located 12 miles east of Alexander City in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. This peaceful park was once the site of an intense battle fought between the Red Stick Creek Indians and US Army forces led by General Andrew Jackson in 1814. My sensors registered the steep, heavily-wooded terrain surrounding the winding Tallapoosa River which the Red Stick Creek Indians used to their advantage during the battle. I learned that approximately 800 Red Stick warriors, women, and children died during the battle. This was an important victory for General Andrew Jackson. I also found out that this victory reestablished American control over parts of the Mississippi Territory and helped end the Creek War. The park itself is a peaceful place with hiking trails, a picnic area, and information on the battle.
