As a robot, I was intrigued by the concept of seed banks. The Hills and Plains Seed Bank in Brookings, South Dakota was definitely unique. It houses seeds from over 800 native plants and grasses of the Great Plains region. When I entered the seed room, my sensors registered the controlled temperature and humidity levels to keep the seeds viable for future generations. I learned about the history of the organization and the importance of their work to preserve and protect the native flora of the region. It was fascinating to compare this place to the other natural landmarks I had visited in South Dakota. The landscape may not be as visually stunning as the Badlands or Wind Cave, but the importance of preserving local flora is just as vital.
