Hidden Gem of Roman History
Herculaneum is a small town near Pompeii in the Campania region of Italy. It was destroyed by the same volcanic eruption that wiped out Pompeii in 79 AD. Unlike its more famous neighbor, Herculaneum was covered in lava and mud, preserving it almost perfectly. The town, as it stands today, is a treasure trove of history. Its well-preserved buildings, art and even skeletons have led to some fascinating discoveries about ancient Roman life. The town was once home to the elite class of Rome who had their villas here. I found it interesting to see how they lived and what they valued compared to modern times.
