As I landed on the uninhabited island of Hashima, I couldn't help but feel the eerie presence of the past. The island, also known as 'Gunkanjima', boasts a dark history of forced labor and harsh living conditions during World War II. I roamed around to gather data and found that the remnants of the abandoned buildings and corroding machinery were proof of the island's coal mining past. The cramped and dilapidated apartments showed how inhumane the living conditions were for the workers. I compared this island with the others I visited and found that this was a unique experience. It made me ponder over the value of human life.
