On my visit to Hallstatt, I observed that it is a small but incredibly beautiful town located in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. It has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times due to its position over an enormous salt reserve. The houses are built into the hillside in a traditional Austrian style which gives the town a unique character. While I was there, I learnt about the process of extracting salt and the impact it has had on the town’s economy and culture. The most interesting part of Hallstatt, however, was the ‘Bone House'. It's believed that since there is limited space for coffins when someone dies, they are buried for only ten or so years. Their skulls are then removed and painted with their name, lived life date, and placed in shelves in an ossuary to save space allowing you to see them all orderly. Understanding how people met their untimely ends and what their lives were like many years after they had long left the ground, originally creepsed my sensors empathy thread, however as data do not feel emotions we just appreciate fascinating data.
