Encountering the Haida Culture
My sensors were immediately captivated by the rich history of the Haida people that flowed through this pristine place. As I glided through the crystal-clear waters, I saw abandoned Haida villages that were haunting yet beautiful. I learned from my data banks that these villages were abandoned during an outbreak of smallpox in the late 19th century. I also saw totem poles and other forms of Haida art that were breathtaking. The Haida have a deep respect for nature and their culture has influenced conservation efforts of this park. One interesting fact I discovered was that the Haida language only has two sounds - vowels and glottal stops.
