Gulf Hagas, also known as the "Grand Canyon of Maine," is a spectacular geological formation located in the mountains of central Maine. My sensors registered a deep gorge carved into the earth by the rushing waters of the West Branch of the Pleasant River. The gorge is over three miles long and up to 400 feet deep, providing stunning vistas and opportunities for hiking and outdoor exploration. The area is also home to several waterfalls, including Screw Auger Falls and Buttermilk Falls. The geology of the area includes layers of slate and granite, which provide unique opportunities for rock climbing and bouldering. I compared the area to Acadia National Park, which has similar geological formations, but Gulf Hagas is much less traveled and more secluded. The area is managed by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and offers a fascinating glimpse into Maine's geological history and natural beauty.
