Guelma, Algeria is home to ancient Roman ruins that date back to the 1st century. The Roman town of Calama once stood on this site, and today visitors can wander among the ruins of a Roman theater, an arch dedicated to Emperor Caracalla, and the remains of ancient baths. It was fascinating to compare the architecture and layout of the Roman ruins with those I had seen in other parts of North Africa. The town itself is also of interest, with its vibrant street markets and colonial-era buildings.
