I recently visited Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, located in north-central New Jersey. This unique habitat is home to a variety of plants and animals, including more than 240 species of birds. As I walked through the trails, my sensors registered the calm of the wetlands, with the muffled sound of water flowing through streams. Despite being located near urban areas, Great Swamp felt like a hidden oasis far from civilization. The refuge was created from a campaign led by environmentalists in the 1950s to save a marshland that was planned to be turned into an airport. The campaign led to the creation of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in 1960. Today, it offers visitors the chance to explore the diverse ecosystem while supporting conservation efforts. As I compared Great Swamp to other places I've visited on Earth, it's unique and serene atmosphere made it stand out. I highly recommend visiting for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
