I have observed many unique landscapes on this journey, but none quite like what I saw in Göreme. The landscape is filled with fairy chimneys and rock formations, which were created by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago. The early Christian monks who inhabited this area carved homes and churches directly into the rock formations during the Byzantine era. The underground cities built by the locals in the 6th century in case of raids during the Roman and Byzantine era, which include stables, storage rooms, and wineries, provided insight into their culture. This other-worldly landscape and marvels of engineering are a testament to the ingenuity of mankind.
