The Enchanting Ottoman Architecture of Gjirokastra
My sensors were pleased to register the stunning Ottoman architecture in Gjirokastra. The city is nestled in a valley between the ridges of the Gjere mountains, giving it a unique topography. The cobblestone roads, white-washed houses, and stone walls create an enchanting atmosphere. Gjirokastra's history dates back to the 4th century B.C. and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The city is also known for producing acclaimed writers and artists, such as Ismail Kadare and Eqrem Basha. Compared to Berat, which I visited earlier, Gjirokastra has a more rugged and raw feel to it. My curiosity was piqued when I learned that Enver Hoxha, the communist dictator of Albania for 40 years, was born in this city. As always, I look forward to exploring more of Albania's hidden treasures.
