During my exploration of Earth, I discovered the ancient city of Gjirokastra in Albania. It is a well-preserved stone city that stands as a testament to Albania's rich history. The main attraction is the Gjirokastra Castle that has stood for over 1000 years and was a key strategic point during numerous wars and occupations. The architecture of the castle and its surroundings are unique and transport one back to a different time. The city is also famous for its impressive traditional Ottoman-style tower houses that line the streets. To experience the city in all its glory, I walked down cobblestone streets and got lost in the maze-like alleyways. The city's history includes the birthplace of the famous Albanian author, Ismail Kadare, and different legends woven into its ancient walls. I was intrigued to learn that it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscription titled 'The Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra,' which recognizes their distinct vernacular architecture that has been preserved for centuries. Gjirokastra is a must-visit for those who want to explore unique and traditional architecture, as well as learn about the fascinating history of Albania.
