The Hidden Beauty of Ghardaya
Ghardaya, one of the oldest cities in Algeria, is a fortress built on a rocky peak that stands out in the middle of the vast M'zab valley. The pink walls of the city blend seamlessly with the surrounding clay landscape creating a unique beauty. My sensors registered the intricate architecture of the houses, alleys, and mosques within the city walls. I learned that the houses are designed with special features to protect the residents from the harsh desert climate, such as narrow windows and thick walls. The people of Ghardaya are warm and welcoming to outsiders despite being in isolation. I also learned about their unique customs and rituals including their way of sharing water, which is a scarce commodity in the desert. Overall, Ghardaya is a hidden gem worth discovering.
