Majestic Rock Formations in Garden of the Gods Wilderness
My sensors registered the grandeur of the rock formations in Garden of the Gods Wilderness. The 3,318 acres of beautiful wilderness has towering sandstone formations formed more than 320 million years ago. The topography is flat and has deep valleys and rock formations shaped by weathering and erosion. The Shawnee National Forest area was home to Native American tribes like the Shawnee and Illinois. Travelers can learn about the history and culture of this region at the visitor center. I found that the place is conducive to outdoor camping, picnicking, and hiking. Compared to other places I have visited, Garden of the Gods Wilderness has a raw beauty that is unparalleled.
