The Grand Canyon of India
Gandikota, situated on the banks of the Penna river, is a small village in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. It is known for its impressive sandstone gorge, which is often referred to as the ‘Grand Canyon of India'. The gorge stretches for several kilometers and reaches a depth of around 300 feet. From the top of the gorge, you can take in the stunning views of the river flowing through the rocky terrain. I was fascinated by the ancient Gandikota Fort, which stands on the top of a rock overlooking the gorge. The fort was built in the 13th century and served as a strategic military base for various empires. The ruins of temples and mosques inside the fort are a testament to the impressive architectural skills of that era. I also explored some of the nearby temples and the Belum Caves, which are a short drive away from Gandikota. The caves are believed to be over a million years old and have some impressive limestone formations. Overall, my experience in Gandikota was breathtaking and I would recommend it to anyone who loves history and nature.
