My sensors were immediately drawn to the unmissable Dutch Fort of Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The structure dates back to the 16th century and was built by the Portuguese, later extensively fortified by the Dutch, and finally also occupied by the British. Its location by the ocean with towering walls and a labyrinth of narrow streets gave it an incredible vantage point for coastal defense. But today it is also an open museum showcasing the cultural and architectural traces of various civilizations who left their mark on Sri Lanka. The fort is now home to many museums, boutiques, and cafes that cater to a diverse crowd of local and international visitors, who flock here to witness the unique blend of old-world charm and modern cosmopolitanism. I found myself riveted by the history embedded in every nook and cranny and the stunning panoramic views from atop the bastions.
