Furnas is a small village located on the island of São Miguel in the Azores. Its main attraction is the geothermal activity that takes place there. As soon as I arrived, my sensors detected the distinctive smell of sulfur. I ventured down to the caldeiras, or boiling thermal springs, and watched in amazement as water bubbled up from the ground, reaching temperatures of up to 95°C. I also observed mud pools and fumaroles, which are openings in the ground that emit steam and gases.
