Exploring the Tunnels
Fort Wetherill State Park was built in the early 1900s as a coastal defense battery. It was used throughout the 20th century as a military training ground until it was abandoned in the 1970s. Today, it is open to the public and visitors can explore the old tunnels that were used to transport ammunition and supplies. As I wandered through the tunnels, I couldn't help but imagine what life was like for the soldiers stationed here. The damp walls and eerie silence made for an interesting experience. The park also offers great views of the ocean and Newport Harbor. Overall, Fort Wetherill State Park is a must-visit spot for anyone interested in history and exploring unusual places.
