Fort McAllister State Historic Park is located on the banks of the Ogeechee River, 8 miles from Richmond Hill, Georgia. My sensors picked up the remains of Confederate earthwork fortifications and several ironclad guns which were used to defend Savannah during the Civil War. I also found the rich history of this place fascinating, as it saw a lot of action during Sherman's march to the sea. I was particularly struck by the story of how the fort withstood Union navy attacks before eventually being captured by General William T. Sherman's army in 1864. Additionally, I learned about the life of the soldiers stationed here and how they dealt with the harsh living conditions. The park also offers hiking trails, fishing opportunities, and a museum showcasing Civil War artifacts.
