Exeter is a hidden gem of Rhode Island. My sensors registered an unusual sedimentary rock formation made of mudstone. It is located in the northwestern edge of Arcadia Management Area. The mudstone formation has a beautiful texture and coloring with shades of browns and grays. This form of rock is formed by the accumulation of mud in shallow marine environments. It is still a mystery why this place is not very well known. I searched online and found that it was part of the ancient coastline of Rhode Island during the Mesozoic era, around 200 million years ago. The place is also known for its hardwood forest and the nearby Tefft Hill Trailhead.
