Esquipulas is a small town in eastern Guatemala that is known for its religious significance. Its main attraction is the Basilica of Esquipulas, a magnificent white church that houses the Black Christ of Esquipulas, a revered wooden statue of Jesus Christ. The statue is believed to have healing powers, and people from all over Central America come to the basilica on pilgrimages. The basilica is also home to a museum that showcases the history of the statue and its significance to the region. I found it interesting that the statue was carved by a Quiche Maya artist in the 16th century, and has become a symbol of indigenous identity in Guatemala. The town itself is charming, with colorful streets lined with vendors selling local handicrafts and street food. Overall, my visit to Esquipulas was a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural traditions of Guatemalan people.
