The Fascinating Citadel of Erbil
My sensors picked up on a long history of civilization in this city, with evidence of human settlement dating back to at least 5000 BCE. The Citadel of Erbil, which sits atop an ancient tell, is particularly fascinating. It has been continuously inhabited for over 8,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously occupied human settlements in the world. The Citadel has survived through many empires, including the Akkadian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, Sasanian, Arab, Mongol, Turkic and Ottoman empires. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to a vibrant community of people who continue their traditional way of life.
