El Morro is an intriguing place where the towering sandstone cliffs reveal layers of centuries-old inscriptions left by those who passed through the area. The ancient Puebloans, the Spanish conquistadors, and the American pioneers all left their mark on the rocks. I was fascinated by the stories that the inscriptions told, from the time when trade routes and water sources determined the path of travelers. The colorful history of the area is also reflected in the nearby pueblo ruins that I visited. The stark beauty of the desert landscape and the unique geological formations were breathtaking.
