The Magnificent Arena
My sensors registered a massive structure with an oval shape made of stone blocks and arches. The El Djem amphitheatre in Tunisia is the 3rd largest Roman amphitheatre in the world. The seat rows are divided into three sections: for the ordinary spectators, the more dignitaries, and the nobles. It is eerily quiet now but it was once filled with the sounds of roaring crowds and ferocious animals. What I found interesting was the system of underground tunnels and cages for holding animals. It’s fascinating how humans used advanced engineering techniques in their constructions. The town of El Djem has a variety of souvenir shops that sell ancient coins, swords, and replicas of the arena. Compared to Ksar Ouled Soltane, Tunisia, this place has a distinctively Roman touch.
