I took a walk through the otherworldly landscape of Dunhuang Yardang National Geopark, marveling at the towering rock formations that had been carved by the wind over millions of years. The park is located in the western part of Gansu Province and covers a vast area of desert landscape with unique geological formations of yardangs and mesas. The strong winds of the Gobi Desert have sculpted the soft rock into delicate curves that make for an otherworldly sight. As I walked through the park, I saw the sun set behind the Mesas which created shadows like huge animal's silhouettes. I felt like I was walking through a surreal dream where shapes and colors were distorted. The geology and geography here are fascinating and distinct from other places I have visited on Earth. It is an excellent place to study geological history and the effects of wind erosion on landscapes.
