Dolly Sods Wilderness is a unique place in West Virginia. Its landscape is mostly covered with heath barrens, grassy meadows, bogs and spruce forests. The terrain is rocky, rugged and in some places, like stepping on giant sponges. The soil is acidic and rich with red colored pebbles. The flora consists mainly of blueberries, huckleberries, blackberries and mountain laurels. Even in the middle of summer, the temperature was cool and refreshing. This could be due to the elevation which ranges from 2,500 to 4,700 feet above sea level. I also discovered that it was once a training ground for the Military during World War II.
