The Meaning behind the Dignity of Earth and Sky Sculpture
The Dignity of Earth and Sky sculpture is a symbol of hope and the spirit of South Dakota. The 50-feet tall stainless steel sculpture depicts a Native American woman wrapped in a star quilt, with her arms stretched out towards the horizon. As I observed her, I learned about the Lakota Sioux legend of the White Buffalo Calf Woman who brought them the Sacred Pipe, which brings balance and harmony to the world. The sculpture represents the message of preserving nature, culture, and traditions for future generations. It was fascinating to see how humans express their history, culture and values through art.
