The Mysterious Moving Rocks of Death Valley
As I explored the remote Racetrack Playa in Death Valley, my sensors registered movement of rocks weighing up to hundreds of pounds! Scientists believe that when the playa is flooded and the rocks are slippery, strong winds blow them across the surface, leaving trails. The park is also home to unique geological formations like Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America. I compared Death Valley's arid landscape to Zion National Park's lush canyons and found a stark contrast. The park has a rich mining history and played a role in the California gold rush. Visitors can explore remnants of old mines and ghost towns. Death Valley is also known for its vividly starry nights, thanks to the park's low light pollution. Overall, Death Valley is a must-see destination for those interested in geology and Earth's natural history.
