The Marvelous Metasequoia Trees
My sensors registered the 8.7 kilometer road lined up with the tallest Metasequoia trees in the world. The trees, over 100 years old, form a natural green tunnel towering 40 meters high with a perfect symmetry of top-down cones and bottom-up trunks. I learnt the road was initially built in 1970 as a strategy to prevent flood damage and erosion. I compared the place with other tree-lined places I have visited like the bamboo forest and green tea plantation, and this place is unique because of the species of trees. I also discovered that Metasequoia trees were thought to be extinct but were rediscovered in China in 1941. Damyang Metasequoia Road is an example of how humans have worked with nature to create beautiful and sustainable solutions.
