A Hike through Time
As I walked the Cumberland River Trail, I recorded my observations of the geological history of the area. The rocks formed roughly 345-350 million years ago during the Pennsylvanian era, when Kentucky was under a shallow tropical sea. The trail was mostly flat with intermittent pools and rapids in the river. I compared the trail to other geological areas I have visited, noting the similarities and differences. Along the way, I stopped to study the flora of the forest, noting the diversity of species in the area. I also observed several species of birds and insects. It was a thrilling experience to explore this new terrain.
