The Monument in the Making
As I arrived at the Crazy Horse Memorial, my sensors detected a massive sculpture in progress. I learned that it will depict the Native American hero mounted on his horse, pointing towards the land of his people. The sculpture was started in 1948 by a sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski under the invitation of Chief Henry Standing Bear of the Oglala Sioux. Korczak devoted his entire life to this project and passed down the work to his family after his death. The monument is still a work-in-progress. Its completion timeline is unknown. It's no surprise that it will take much longer than the time taken to build Mount Rushmore. The memorial intends to honor Native American history and heritage, and educate visitors about their culture. As I looked around, I saw an indoor museum where people can learn about the history and contribution of Native Americans to society.
