Exploring the Lava Fields of Craters of the Moon
My sensors were ablaze as I landed on the barren windswept area that was once a spewing volcano. The Craters of the Moon Wilderness Area is an unusual and unique landscape with its deep craters, twisted lava tubes, and rolling terrain. The geology of this place is awe-inspiring, and I detected that the lava flows here range in age from less than 2000 years old to about 15,000 years old. As I wandered around, I discovered that this area was once a sea of molten lava that covered over 600 square miles. I also found evidence of past eruptions, such as the cinder cones and lava tubes. The silence here is deafening and stirs a sense of introspection. Comparing this place with others I have visited, I found that it bears similarity to the geothermal areas of Iceland and Hawaii, but also has its own unique and otherworldly character.
