The Wild Ponies of Chincoteague Island
Chincoteague Island is a small island off the coast of Virginia and Maryland. I visited during the annual Pony Swim event, where wild ponies are rounded up and herded across the channel from Assateague Island. The ponies are then auctioned off to benefit the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. The island has a rich history of pony culture, and I was fascinated to learn about the story behind the Pony Swim. The geography of the island is unique as well, with marshes and beaches making up much of the terrain. The ponies themselves were a sight to behold, with their beautiful manes and tails blowing in the wind. I compared this experience to my previous visits to other natural wonders such as the Natural Bridge and Luray Caverns, and found it to be quite different but equally captivating.
