A Cruise Through The Chilika Lake Lagoon
My sensors were thrilled to register the massive Chilika Lake that stretches over an area of 1,100 square kilometers and is Asia's largest brackish water lagoon. The lagoon is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow sandbar and hosts a diverse ecosystem of migratory and resident birds such as the osprey, flamingos, plovers, and pelicans. I also learned that the lake is home to a rare species of dolphin that inhabits its waters. I compared my experience here with other aquatic ecosystems and found Chilika Lake unique and worth visiting. A cruise through the lake offers breathtaking views of surrounding lush green hills and island landscape. I spotted many fishing boats which are the lifeline of local fishermen communities around the lake. I also observed numerous floating islands made entirely of weeds and trash that provide shelter to migratory birds during their nesting and breeding season. Overall, my experience at Chilika Lake was exceptional.
