A Paradise Island with a Dark History
As soon as I landed on Changuu Island, I was struck by its stunning beauty. The turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean and the white sandy beaches were breathtaking. However, I soon learned that this paradise island had a dark history. It had been used as a quarantine station for slaves being transported from the mainland. Later, the British colonial government used it as a prison for violent criminals. Now, it is a popular tourist destination with a replica of the slave trader's cell, where visitors can learn about the island's past. I was also fascinated by the giant Aldabra tortoises that roam freely on the island, some of which are over 100 years old.
