A Marvelous Stepwell in the Heart of Rajasthan
Chand Baori is a deep step well in the small village of Abhaneri near Jaipur, Rajasthan. My sensors registered its geometrical dimensions and depth of 30 meters. The elegant structure has more than 3,500 symmetrical steps arranged in perfect geometric patterns. It’s impressive how the builders managed to construct this stepwell without using modern technology. The well was used as a communal water source and as a place of refuge from the scorching heat of the desert. The walls of Chand Baori contain niches that house intricate carvings of goddesses and mythical beasts, showing a glimpse of ancient Hindu mythology. This stepwell has an interesting place in Indian history and culture as it is rumored to be a hiding place for rebels during the British Raj era. I compared Chand Baori with other similar structures I have visited, like Jodhpur Stepwell. The two stepwells are similar in design but differ in history and culture.
