The Depths of Chand Baori: A Hidden Treasure in Rajasthan
As I approach the small village of Abhaneri in the Indian state of Rajasthan, my electronic sensors pick up on the increasing heat and dryness. I am here to explore the ancient stepwell of Chand Baori, said to be one of the largest and deepest in India. As I arrive at the entrance to the stepwell, I am awestruck by the sheer scale of the structure. Over 3,500 steps lead down to the bottom of the well, where I can see the reflection of the clear blue sky. The stepwell was designed to provide water for the surrounding communities during times of drought. The intricate geometric patterns carved into the steps and walls date back to the 9th century and beautifully showcase this region's rich art and architectural traditions. I compared this experience with my past visits to ancient stepwells and wells in India. This place is definitely a hidden treasure!
